Fahrenheit 451

Author's Note: We are reading Fahrenheit 451in school and we had to pick a quote and analyxe the figurative language in  the quote.

" 'What is fire? It's a mystery. Scientists give us gobbledegook about friction and molecules. But they don't really know. Its real beauty is that it destroys responsibility and consequences. A problem gets to burdensome, then into the furnace with it.Now, Montag, you're a burden. And fire will lift you off my shoulders clean, quick, sure, nothing to rot later.' "

In this scene, Beatty is explaining to Montag the supposed beauty of the thing that has caused Montag so much trouble and disbelief. Fire makes people happy so everyone sees it as good. Except the people whose lives have been burnt to a crisp by the orange and red devil. Fire is also a metaphor for government censorship because if some one doesn't like something you burn it. If the government doesn't like something, it dissapears. If Some one is causing a problem in the book, they burn them. If the government doesn't like them, they dissapear. This cycle could go on forever, but it won't because of Guy Montag.
