Christmas Carol Response

Author's note: In Language arts class we read A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens and had to pick one quote and analyze it and I thought this passage was interesting because of the way that Dickens depicts his character's personalities, by their physical features.

"He had so heated himself with rapid walking in the fog and frost, this nephew of Scrooge's, that he was all in a glow; his face was ruddy and handsome; his eyes sparkled, and his breath smoked again."

This quote from Charles Dicken's A Christmas Carol is introducing Scrooge's nephew a kind, loving young man who isn't worried about much and is as spirited as dog in water. His sparkling eyes and glowing features are in stark contrast to the "frosty rime [that] was on his head, and on his eyebrows, and his wiry chin. Also, like the "frosty rime" that Dickens depicts as not on the outside but on the inside so is Scrooge's nephew's glowing features and his sparkling eyes. They are probably just synonyms for his personality because he seems like the kind of person that I would like to get to know. So what Dickens depicting is the personalities of the two characters in this scene instead of their physical features.

  1. A spirited dog in water? Ah, my dear boy, you must be well acquainted with the Labrador Retriever, the most spirited of animals who yearn for the sea even as their feet clutch the sand.
